Choosing and changing AI models

Anara gives you access to multiple AI models depending on your plan. Learn how to switch models, what Auto mode does, and which models are available on each plan.

Anara supports multiple AI models from different providers. Switching models is like choosing the right tool for the job — a fast model for quick questions, a more capable one for deep synthesis. You can switch at any point, including mid-conversation.

The model selector

The model selector is located next to the chat input at the bottom of any chat panel. Click it to open a dropdown showing the models available on your plan.

Auto mode

Auto is the default for all plans. In Auto mode, Anara picks the most appropriate model for your question. This is a good starting point if you are not sure which model to use.

Models by plan

The models you can access depend on your Anara plan. Higher-tier plans unlock more powerful models.

  • Free and Plus: Auto mode only. Anara picks the best model for each question.

  • Pro, Max 5x, and Max 20x: every model in the selector, including GPT 5.6 Sol, GPT 5.6 Terra, GPT 5.6 Luna, Sonnet 5, Opus 5, Fable 5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3.6 Flash, and Grok 4.5

More powerful models use more of your included usage, and the model selector shows each model's relative cost, so you can spend your limit where it matters.

When to use which model

Not every question needs the most powerful model. Here is a rough guide:

  • Quick lookups and summaries: Auto mode works well and responds quickly.

  • Complex synthesis across many documents: More capable models like Sonnet 5, GPT 5.6 Sol, or Gemini 3.1 Pro handle multi-document reasoning better.

  • High-stakes work requiring the strongest reasoning: Opus 5 or Fable 5 is the best choice for your hardest questions. They also use the most of your included usage, so save them for the questions that deserve them.

Changing models mid-conversation

You can switch models at any point during a conversation. The next message you send uses the newly selected model — previous messages are not affected. This is useful when you start with a fast model for quick questions and switch to a more powerful one for complex synthesis.

Separate defaults for chat and editor

You can set different default models for the AI chat and the note editor:

  1. Under Chat, choose your default model for conversations.

  2. Under Editor, choose the model for AI help while writing notes.

These defaults apply when you start a new session. You can always override the model per conversation using the model selector in the chat input.

If something is not working

A model is not appearing in the selector. On Free and Plus plans, chat runs in Auto mode and individual models can't be selected. Every model is available on Pro and above. If a model you expect to see is not listed, check your current plan in Settings > Billing.
